Marist gets elusive AAAA title

ATLANTA - Anderson Russell scored two touchdowns as Marist scored on its first three possessions en route to a 21-6 victory over Statesboro Friday night in the Class AAAA state championship football game.<br>

Quarterback Sean McVay scored the other touchdown for the War Eagles (14-1), who captured their first state championship since 1989. It was Marist's first football title won on its home field.<br>

McVay finished with 14 carries for 102 yards.<br>
<br>
Statesboro (11-3-1) scored its only points with 3:03 left in the game on Tavius Roberts' 1-yard plunge. But Marist chewed up the final minutes and ran out the clock.<br>

Marist completely dominated the first half, holding the ball 18:59 compared to just 8:01 for the Blue Devils, in addition to outgaining Statesboro 246-81 in total yardage. Statesboro ran just 17 offensive plays compared to 33 for the War Eagles.<br>

The War Eagles, who lost 20-17 to St. Pius X in its regular-season finale, rebounded and rolled through the postseason, outscoring its opponents 148-64.<br>
<br>
McVay, who threw just three passes in the game, engineered an 11-play, 89-yard drive on the War Eagles' opening possession. All three of Marist's scoring drives spanned 10 plays or more.
