Lady Falcons win first-ever Lanierland title

MURRAYVILLE - The Flowery Branch girls basketball team held off a furious fourth quarter Johnson rally to win its first-ever Lanierland title Saturday night, 59-57.

The ninth-ranked Lady Falcons (9-2) became the fourth different winner in the girls bracket in the last four years, the first time that has happened since 1966.

No. 3 Johnson (7-1) is still looking for its first Lanierland title since 1991.

Flowery Branch never trailed after jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead. The Lady Knights climbed to within three several times in the first half but the Lady Falcons closed out the first half on a 7-2 run for a 33-24 lead.

Flowery Branch looked to be putting the game away midway through the third quarter going on a 10-3 run for a 45-31 lead. But Johnson finally got going.

The Lady Knights went on a 14-2 run to finish the third quarter to trail just 47-45. They tied the score twice, the last at 55-55 with 1:50 left in the game.

But Flowery Branch held Johnson scoreless the rest of the way to to pull out the win.
