Gainesville Parks and Recreation Board Chairman Cheryl Hinderscheid, was recognized as Georgia Recreation and Park Association Volunteer of the Year. She has served as a member of the board since 1987 and was recognized for her community involvement as a volunteer with Special Olympics, Campfire Boys and Girls, Cub Scouts, the Hall County Humane Society, Gainesville-Hall '96 Olympic Committee, Lanier Canoe 2003, and the Junior League as well as a member of the Gainesville Garden Club Council.
Parks and Recreation Director Melvin Cooper said that "Cheryl's volunteer efforts are evident in her focus on caring for citizens, our parks, and our environment. She is an individual who is about building community, through an infrastructure of unselfish, equitable relationships."
In addition, the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department received the Innovative Program of the Year Award, the May is Older American's Month and the July is Parks and Recreation Month Award.
