COMMERCE - COMMERCE - It's back to basics for the Commerce football team.

Blocking. Tackling. Catching. Playing host to a playoff game.

The Tigers open their playoff season against Whitefield Academy Friday night in the first round of the Class A playoffs.

Commerce coach Steve Savage said despite their record (5-5) the Wolfpack wouldn't be in the playoffs if they weren't good enough to win.

"You can't take anyone for granted once you're in the playoffs," Savage said. "If you don't do the little things, anyone can sneak up on you and it's over. That's why we've spent the last week going over the little things and getting back to the basics of where we were in the middle of the season."

The Tigers have stormed through the final half of the regular season winning their last six games. The offense was a juggernaught averaging more than 300 yards of offense and nearly 37 points a game. but that's not good enough for Savage, who said they can get better.

"The starters haven't played but just like two quarters in each game and they need to be a little more sharp at this time of the year," Savage said. "We'll work those things out and then we'll be ready to do some things."

Meanwhile, Whitefield Academy limped into the playoffs having lost four of its last five games giving up 35.6 points a game during the stretch.

"I'm sure they're working on things to improve. I don't expect them to just roll over for us. I'm sure they'll be ready to play," Savage said.

Quarterback Josh Haynes and running back Dennis Wilder lead the Tigers attack.
