ATLANTA - The flu season has started slow this year, but federal officials are saying they expect that to change.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting Thursday that Influenza activity is expected to increase during the coming weeks.
But doctors at the CDC say it's not too late to get a flu shot. That's partly because this year's flu vaccine mix seems to be well-matched against the type A and B strains of flu found in the United States.
Flu activity has been reported in 25 states. Most of the activity has been low, but flu activity has been higher in the South.
Influenza -- also known as the flu -- is a respiratory virus that kills about 36 thousand people and puts another 110,000 in the hospital every year in the United States yearly.
Flu shots are encouraged for people at high risk of complications from the virus, including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. The CDC also recommends that health care workers or household members who may spread the flu to high risk people get flu shots.
