President invokes Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy

LANDOVER, MARYLAND - President Bush, evoking the memory of Martin Luther King Junior, proclaimed Monday there is still work to do to fulfill the slain civil rights leader&#39;s dream of equality in America. <br> <br> Bush says that the power of King&#39;s words, the clarity of his vision and the courage of his leadership occurred because he put his faith in God. <br> <br> To strong applause, Bush noted that while the government can write checks through various assistance programs, it can&#39;t put hope in people&#39;s hearts. <br> <br> Bush&#39;s speech at a predominantly black congregation in Landover, Maryland, came at a time when his decisions on affirmative action and judicial nominations have brought criticism. <br> <br> To coincide with the holiday, the White House announced Sunday the president will propose increasing spending by five percent for grants to historically black colleges, universities, graduate programs and Hispanic education institutions.
