CARTERSVILLE - A 44-year-old woman died after two canoes capsized as she, her husband and another couple took a New Year's Eve trip down the Etowah River, authorities said.
Sandra Armstrong of Kingston died either by drowning or by exposure, Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton said Wednesday. An autopsy was planned Thursday at the state medical examiner's office.
With Armstrong and her husband, Wayne, were Wayne Armstrong's brother and his brother's girlfriend. They left before midnight Tuesday and the two canoes apparently capsized about 4 a.m., Bartow County Fire Sgt. Mike Brown said. One of the survivors made it to nearby U.S. 411 before dawn and flagged down someone for help.
The river was swollen from recent rains and releases from Allatoona Dam.
