ATLANTA - People arrested on state charges are now being sent to jails in Fulton or DeKalb counties rather than the Atlanta city jail.
The change started overnight.
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin proposed the change in an effort to save the city eleven million dollars.
The city has promised to assist the county jails as they take additional people into custody.
Meanwhile, Fulton County has asked for 312 new employees at a cost of $16 million to deal with the increased work.
Overall, officials say they believe the new system will be better.
Both Fulton County Sheriff Jackie Barrett and DeKalb County District Attorney J. Tom Morgan say people arrested on state charges belong in county jails rather than the city jail.
