WASHINGTON - Saxby Chambliss has been sworn in as a U.S. Senator, Georgia's first Senate Republican since the death of Paul Coverdell in July 2000.
Chambliss -- a four-term U.S. representative -- defeated first-term Democratic Senator Max Cleland in November.
Chambliss wasn't the only newcomer in the congressional delegation. During the same ceremony two years ago, no new House member from Georgia was sworn-in. But Tuesday, there were five.
Democrats Denise Majette, Jim Marshall and David Scott, along with Republicans Max Burns and Phil Gingrey, officially joined the ranks as members of Congress.
