ATLANTA - Federal financial aid for students at Morris Brown College will be cut by up to 50 percent by the school's decision to speed up its spring semester.
Morris Brown President Charles Taylor said the cash-strapped school will not pass the financial burden along to students, however.
``We are not going to expect students to make up the difference between a standard term and an accelerated term,'' Taylor said Tuesday. ``We will not charge them for services they do not receive.''
College officials announced last week that they would double the amount of time students spend in each class, ending the semester in early March instead of May, in an effort to finish the academic year before a hearing on an accreditation appeal.
More than 80 percent of the students are on some sort of federal financial aid. Department of Education officials said Pell Grants for low-income students must be prorated over a 30-week academic year and will be cut in half, because of the shortened semester.
