Alcoa reports wider loss, plans to cut 8,000 jobs

PITTSBURGH - Alcoa Incorporated has announced plans Wednesday to cut eight-thousand jobs this year and sell non-core businesses that aren&#39;t producing what it calls ``superior&#39;&#39; profits, including a company based in Norcross, Georgia. <br> <br> The news came as the world&#39;s largest aluminum producer reported a wider-than-expected fourth-quarter loss. <br> <br> The company also has reviewed all of its businesses ranging from alumina -- the raw material used to make many aluminum products -- to automotive supplies. <br> <br> Alcoa had expected market losses in aerospace and other industries to flatten out, yet Alcoa&#39;s sales continued to slide. <br> <br> For the quarter ended December 31, the company lost $223 million, or 27 cents per share. Revenue slipped to $5.06 billion from $5.1 billion a year earlier.
