VILLA RICA - Police Chief Dean Maddox, accused of sexual harassment by three former employees, resigned Tuesday night at a meeting of the City Council.
Maddox, who has been chief for eight years, has been the subject of a complaint the former employees filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
He has denied the allegations but said he was under a lot of stress.
``There's been a lot of things going on for a long time, a lot of pressures,'' Maddox told the council. ``You supported me, and I've enjoyed working for you through these years. We've come a long way. I'm resigning. It's time to do something else, I guess.''
Mayor Monroe Spake said the west Georgia city would continue to defend Maddox against the harassment accusations.
``I think that at this time it was best for the city to accept his resignation,'' Spake said. ``We're not saying he's guilty of anything.''
