AUGUSTA - A 61-year-old man who police said was beaten by his 45-year-old son shot and killed him Saturday.
The father, Dallas Carpenter, was bleeding from both arms when he pulled out his .25-caliber pistol and shot his son, Robert Carpenter, in the chest, said Richmond County Deputy Coroner Grover Tuten.
``There is only so much a person can take. It was probably only a matter of time,'' said Stacy Adams, who lives nearby.
Dallas Carpenter, a retired serviceman, was not charged pending further investigation, said Investigator Matt Stocks.

``There was a long history of domestic violence in the household,'' he said.
Two hours before the shooting, Robert Carpenter was picked up by deputies and driven home because he was drunk, Stocks said.
