PINE MOUNTAIN - One of the country's leading botanical centers has scrapped a proposal to build a $30 million lodge and private golf club because of a lack of funding.
The Callaway Gardens project would have included an upscale 100-room Southern Pine Lodge, clubhouse with 24 luxury club condominiums and redesign of the Garden View and Sky View golf courses.
Callaway's director of marketing -- Kathy Tilley -- says the September 11 attacks and the economic downturn of the last year hampered the organization's efforts to secure financing for the project.
Those who paid reservation fees for club memberships or club homes are having their money returned.
In August, Callaway Gardens dedicated a $12.6 environmentally friendly conference center.
The lodge and golf club was supposed to be part of the Resort at Callaway. It was to be built on the property surrounding The Southern Pine.
