JONESBORO - Just one day after being fired by the school board, former superintendent Dan Colwell showed up to work. Interim superintendent William Chavis confronted Colwell at the board's central office, and police eventually tried to escort Colwell out of the building.

Colwell -- a 34-year employee of the school system -- objected to a vote at Monday night's board meeting that dismissed him from his position.

Clayton County's board of education voted four-to-two to fire him, with some board members saying they had no confidence in Colwell as superintendent.

Colwell says the decision is illegal, and that board member never told him they had concerns with his performance.

The vote to remove Colwell was not on the school board's agenda.
