Gainesville Super K manager Mike Easter confirmed the upcoming closing and said it was expected to happen within the next 60 days. He said the store learned of the decision Tuesday morning. Easter expected to be able to comment further within a couple of days.
Big K stores in Cumming, Suwanee and Winder are included in the closings.
Chief executive James Adamson said the discount chain plans to emerge from bankruptcy by the end of April.
Company officials said up to 35,000 Kmart employees will lose their jobs in the new round of closings, which will leave the company with around 1500 stores. Easter said he couldn't immediately comment on the number of Gainesville employees that would be affected.
Last year, Kmart shut down 283 stores, affecting 22,000 jobs.
Kmart officials said they need to close stores while under bankruptcy protection to allow them to get out of leases. The stores targeted for closure include those with unprofitable leases, money-losing locations and those that are being pressured by nearby rivals, including Wal-Mart and Target stores.
