DALTON - The Telemundo television network is putting Dalton in the spotlight of Spanish-language TV.

Angie Sandoval, a correspondent for the Florida-based network, has been taping interviews in the north Georgia city this week for stories in a series on how Hispanic immigration has affected small towns.

Telemundo's interest should come as no surprise to residents of Dalton and surrounding Whitfield County, where the Hispanic population exploded from 2,321 in 1990 to more than 18,000 in 2000. Hispanics make up 22 percent of the county's population the highest percentage in Georgia.

Sandoval spent Tuesday at Dug Gap Elementary School, sitting in with a literacy class where immigrant parents learn English. She also interviewed local authorities for a story on how Mexican cartels are pushing drugs into small towns.

Telemundo plans to air the Dalton segments Jan. 27 and Feb. 12, Sandoval said. The network is available both in the United States and in 22 Latin American countries.
