ATLANTA - If Jackie Henry were grading Governor Sonny Perdue on his promises to educators, the 29-year-veteran school teacher would give him an F.
Henry, along with thousands of Georgia teachers, was told this week she would not be getting a pay raise under Perdue's budget plan. It's the first time in ten years that teachers' state-funded salaries have not grown.
Henry -- a third-grade teacher in Dekalb County -- says Perdue's decision is --``a huge step in the wrong direction.''
The National Education Association says the average salary for Georgia teachers last year was $44,073, $514 below the national average.
Teachers say they feel the lack of a pay raise is a slap in the face, and will ultimately hurt teacher recruiting.
