BRUNSWICK - Many former employees of the Durango-Georgia Paper Company's mill are going back to school.

The Coastal Georgia Community College in Brunswick has seen a 13.4 percent increase in full- and part-time students compared to the same period last year.

School officials say that sharp increase is partly because of nontraditional students returning to school. Many of them are looking for the knowledge, skills, degrees and certificates that will improve their chances for new employment.

The paper mill in Camden County closed November 15, putting 900 employees out of work.

Since then, former Durango employees have been seeking professional licenses in nursing, auto mechanics and welding.
