GHSA committee drops Big 32 support

THOMASTON - The Georgia High School Association reclassification committee recommended dropping support for a new classification system which puts the state&#39;s 32 largest schools in a separate playoff bracket. <br> <br> Thursday, the 12-member panel called for the GHSA executive committee to vote against the plan at a meeting February 18. <br> <br> Back in October, the executive committee approved the Big 32 plan, which was designed to equalize competition in football playoffs and other major sports. Under the proposal, the state would have returned to four classes instead of the current five. <br> <br> The Big 32 teams would have competed in their normal regions during the regular season, then separated to form their own state championship tournament. It wasn&#39;t supposed to take effect until fall of 2004. <br> <br> The only schools outside metro Atlanta which would have been included in the proposed Big 32 classification are Camden County, Colquitt County and Lowndes County high schools. <br> <br> The reclassification committee recommended keeping the current five classes, with 15 percent of the schools in Class AAAAA, the largest class. Schools would retain the privilege of playing in a higher division.
