ATLANTA - A woman convicted of contributing to her five-year-old nephew's death was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Terri Lynn Peterson was convicted last December in the death of Terrell Peterson. Terrell weighed just 29 pounds and was covered with cuts and bruises when he died of cardiac arrest in 1998.

Pharina Peterson -- her mother and Terrell's grandmother and guardian -- pleaded guilty to eight counts of murder and cruelty to children last year and is serving life in prison without parole.

Terri Lynn Peterson had refused to plead guilty to a single count of child cruelty in exchange for a 10-year sentence.

Superior Court Judge Bensonetta Tipton Lane sentenced her Friday to a life sentence plus 10 years.

Peterson will be eligible for parole after serving 15 years. But prosecutors say they intend to fight any parole effort.
