CLEARWATER, FLORIDA - A Pasco County, Florida, teen smirked before a judge sentenced him to life in prison for the May 2001 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend's father.

Cicruit Judge Richard Luce told 18-year-old William Scott Lang, ``A smile on your face is really not appropriate at this time.''

Lang was convicted of first-degree murder in July after a jury rejected his claim that he accidentally shot Richard Hosking as he was trying to kill himself.

He also was sentenced to 30 years on related charges. He still faces two charges of solicitation to commit murder after allegedly trying to arrange from jail the killing of Hosking's wife and daughter, whom he held hostage after the killing.

Lang, a member of Hosking's church, had briefly dated his daughter, Katie.

Lang broke into the Hoskings' home on the day of the killing and into a safe where a gun was kept. He contended later he wanted to commit suicide.

He waited inside for Hosking's daughter to return from school because he wanted to ask her why she had broken off their relationship.

But Hosking unexpectedly arrived home. A prosecutor said Lang shot Hosking, assistant director of the Pasco County Health Department, as he tried to flee.

Prosecutors say after the early afternoon shooting Lang waited for Katie Hosking, and then her mother Lauren Hosking, to return home and held them hostage as they pleaded for their lives.
Lang fled in Hosking's car and was captured several days later in Statesboro, Georgia.
