PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA - Almost half of a $40 million apartment complex being built by Atlanta-based Trammell-Crow Residential in Petaluma, California, has been destroyed by flames.
Six firefighters suffered minor injuries battling Monday's three-alarm blaze.
The fire created a wall of 100-foot-tall flames and a huge tower of thick black smoke that could be seen for miles.
Five three-story buildings planned for the Alexian Park Central project burned to the ground, destroying 48 apartments and 58 townhouses.
Sparks triggered scores of small grass fires and ignited the roof of an office building more than a quarter of a mile away.
Cause of the fire is under investigation Tuesday. No damage estimate was available.
