FENTON, MISSOURI - A Georgia man, thought to be a fugitive wanted for attempted murder in Alabama, shot himself to death in a motel room Wednesday night after an hours-long standoff with police, authorities said.
An officer conducting a room-to-room search of a Motel 6 in Fenton discovered the man's body in an attic space of one of the guest rooms about 10:30 p.m., St. Louis County Police spokesman Mason Keller said.

The man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Keller said. His body was found eight hours after FBI units and police tactical squads surrounded and evacuated the motel and began negotiations for a surrender.
Police did not identify the man, saying only that they had information on a fugitive wanted for the attempted murder of two Montgomery, Ala., police officers last month. Officers arrived at the motel at 2:30 p.m., and tried to make contact with the man, but he reportedly locked the door and refused to talk.
Police in Montgomery issued arrest warrants last week for Neil Perkins, 31, of Roswell, Ga., who was charged with two counts of attempted murder and one count of transporting stolen property into Alabama.

In that case, officers in separate patrol cars, stopped a man driving a pickup truck, who matched the description of a suspect in two hotel robberies earlier that evening.

The driver opened fire with a .22-caliber handgun as one of the officers approached the truck with his weapon drawn. The officer was shot in the forehead.
The other officer had stopped his patrol car to assist his partner and was shot in the shoulder as he attempted to call in the pickup truck's license plate number.
