UK rolls over UTEP

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY - Jared Lorenzen completed 10-of-17 pass attempts for 211 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Kentucky Wildcats to a 77-17 beating of the Texas-El Paso Miners at Commonwealth Stadium. <br> <br> Ten different players reached the end zone for the Wildcats (2-0), who posted their best scoring performance in 50 years. <br> <br> Artose Pinner led the Kentucky ground game with 116 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Arliss Beach added 108 yards and a touchdown on nine carries for the Wildcats. <br> <br> UTEP (1-1) was led by quarterback Jon Schaper who completed 10-of-24 pass attempts for 118 yards and a touchdown. <br> <br> Matt Austin paced the Miners on the ground as he carried the ball 14 times for 112 yards with a touchdown. <br> <br> Kentucky opened the scoring when Lorenzen connected with Aaron Boone down the left side of the field on a 35-yard touchdown pass to put the Wildcats ahead 7-0 with 11:26 left in the first. <br> <br> UTEP countered with a 40-yard field goal by Keith Robinson to cut the Kentucky lead to 7-3. <br> <br> The Wildcats pushed the lead to 14-3 when Pinner ran nine yards for the score to cap a 13-play, 75-yard drive. <br> <br> Kentucky kept the pressure up as Lorenzen hit Glenn Holt Jr. on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 13:14 left in the second quarter. <br> <br> The Miners scored their last points in the half when Schaper tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Minor. The score capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive and cut the Wildcat lead to 21-10 with 10:43 left in the second quarter. <br> <br> The Wildcats closed out the scoring in the first half with two touchdown passes by Lorenzen. First, he hit Chris Bernard on a 49-yard strike. Then, with 1:32 remaining in the half, Lorenzen found Chase Harp for a seven-yard touchdown pass to give Kentucky a 35-10 advantage. <br> <br> Kentucky was even more dominant in the second half as it opened the stanza by scoring 35 unanswered points. In the third quarter alone, Lorenzen hit Derek Abney for a 68-yard touchdown strike, Mike Kamphake scored on a six-yard run, Holt scored on a 16-yard run, Shane Boyd found pay dirt on a 20-yard run and Dan Lumley scored from the one-yard line to give the Wildcats a 70-10 lead. <br> <br> UTEP scored its last points with 9:38 left in the game when backup quarterback Orlando Cruz connected with Jacob Gonzales for a 20-yard touchdown pass. <br> <br> The Wildcats closed out the scoring on a 15-yard touchdown scamper by Daniel Hopewell to bring the score to its final of 77-17. <br> <br> Kentucky handed the Miners their ninth straight road loss in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
