The modest and well-known statement contained in the Hippocratic oath has always stood out to me. This pledge for all physicians includes the simple declaration, "Do no harm." It is tucked in the midst of the lofty goals of those who facilitate health and healing. There in the company of all to which they aspire is the simple caution to do no harm.
The tone of this oath is to set the bar of one's intent and character notably high. Then, as a note of warning, the "low bar" is mentioned - below which one should never fall. In their quest for doing good, any harm always must be avoided.
Do no harm. As I have worked with couples over these years, I have heard much of their pain. Some of it came from events beyond them and invaded their lives. Yet much of the pain is "self inflicted"
