For the third straight year, Princeton University tops the annual rankings of American colleges and universities compiled by U.S. News and World Report.
Harvard and Yale are tied for second.

The list of the top 50 national universities ranks Emory University in Atlanta at 18th place, as it has been for the past four years. It is tied with Notre Dame.

Georgia Tech is at 38th place.

The magazine ranks schools in many categories.

Among public universities, Georgia Tech is at ninth place, tied with the University of Illinois.

The University of Georgia stayed tied at 18th with the University of Maryland.

Agnes Scott College and Spelman Colege are in the second tier of top liberal arts colleges.

Emory, the University of Georgia, Agnes Scott, Mercer University, LaGrange Collega and Shorter College are all ranked as ``Great Schools at Great Prices.''

Some education experts complain the system the magazine uses to compile the list is flawed. Twenty-five percent of a school's total score is based on ratings given by other college presidents. Some say that taints the findings by opening the door for the presidents to low-ball their competitors.
