CANTON - Police found an injured woman in the woods after she directed them to her location over three hours using a fading cell phone, Cherokee County authorities said.
The woman, who may have been sexually assaulted, was ``very disoriented'' and beaten so badly her eyes were swollen shut. Her name was not released.
She called 911 Thursday morning, said State Patrol spokesman Jim Shuler. State Patrol pilot David Doehla was sent out, but the woods were so thick he couldn't see anything below him.
The woman could hear when the helicopter came near and relayed that information to the 911 dispatcher, Shuler said. In that way, Doehla was able to know when he was above the woman and was able to direct deputies on the ground.
``She was in a bad signal area. She'd call and lose the signal, then call 911 back,'' Shuler said. ``This woman was really smart. She was fighting for her survival.''
She was found around 12:30 p.m. near the Bartow County line near Lake Allatoona. The woman ``has no recollection of time'' and could not tell investigators how long she had been in the woods, said Maj. Vic West of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
