LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County acquired 61 acres of land with a view of Stone Mountain and plans to turn it into a park that offers hiking, jogging, picnicking and other activities.
The tract of land on Georgia Highway 124 near Centerville was purchased yesterday for $1.5 million with funding from the state's 2002 Georgia Greenspace Program.
The land meets the criteria required under the program, including the protection of scenic property, the promotion of passive recreation, protection of water quality, wetlands, and flood-prone areas and the preservation of archaeological and historical sites.
Last year the county used funding under the greenspace program to acquire the historic Alcovy Gristmill near Lawrenceville and partially fund the purchase of 350 acres near Norris Lake.
