WEST POINT - A Georgia textile company is planning big changes in response to lagging sales.

WestPoint Stevens of West Point, Georgia, says Friday that it will close some underperforming stores and shift production from towels to bedding.

The company is the nation's top make of bed linens and bath towels. It produces the Martha Stewart line of bed and bath linens for Kmart.

WestPoint Stevens shares reached a new 52-week low on the New York Stock Exchange Friday, down 30 cents to 74 cents. The stock had traded at a year high of $6.05 on April 24, after the company predicted growth in 2002 despite a decline in sales to Kmart.

The company also makes sheets and home textiles under the Martex, Lady Pepperell, Ralph Lauren Home and Disney Home brands or licenses.
