LILBURN - The state Department of Agriculture shut down a suburban Atlanta bakery Friday after inspectors found roaches crawling on shelves and walls, and rat droppings in cake pans and other places.

``The conditions there were unacceptable,'' Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin said. ``The place was in total disarray.''

The shutdown of Gaby's Mexican Bakery follows other recent closures by state officials due to roach and rodent infestation. An Atlanta-area Sam's Club was fined Sep. 5 for infestation by mice. Last month, a Forest Park wholesaler that supplied food to many of Atlanta's trendy restaurants was fined.

Officials have not decided whether to fine Gaby's. The bakery has until Monday to correct the violations. A second inspection will determine whether it can reopen.

Late Friday, the store owners were inside the store with exterminators. Neither would comment on the incident.
