ATLANTA - If you don't vote, it's your fault when you can't get a good job or live in a neighborhood with good schools.

That's the message former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson delivered Monday about his new nonpartisan group that wants to increase voter turnout.

Jackson says disillusioned and apathetic registered voters need to quit blaming others for their own problems.

People will only get better health care and lifestyles when they get out and vote for representatives who reflect their views.

The American Voters League will focus on getting registered voters to exercise their rights rather than voter registration.

Jackson was a three-term Atlanta mayor and former candidate for national Democratic Party chairman.

But he says he's committed to having people vote no matter what party or views they choose.

The nonprofit organization initially would target voters in the so-called ``Black Belt'' of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Jackson says the eight states historically post poor voter turnouts.
The league will focus on media and marketing more than rallies to get people to vote.
