ATLANTA - Former Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox was expected to celebrate his birthday Monday with a transfer to the rehabilitation services of North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, said his daughter, Linda Densmore.
Maddox, who turned 87, was admitted to Northside Hospital July 27 to remove an intestinal blockage. A second operation was needed to correct complications, Densmore said.
Birthday cards have been arriving for a week, Densmore said, but celebrations were limited to family members.
Densmore said her father is recovering slowly; he was able to begin walking the hospital hallways last week.
Maddox, who has battled cancer and heart disease for decades, served as Georgia's 75th governor from 1967 to 1971. He served one term and then was lieutenant governor under Jimmy Carter.
Georgia's oldest living former governor lives in Cobb County. Doctors diagnosed prostate cancer in late 1983, and he had surgery in March 1997 for an intestinal blockage. That fall, doctors operated to remove cancer from his ear lobe and canal.
