A Circuit Court jury convicted 18-year-old William Scott Lang of first-degree murder Wedsnesday, rejecting his statement to detectives that he accidentally shot Richard Hosking and had intended to kill himself.
Hosking, the assistant director of the Pasco County Health Department, was killed May 22, 2001.
Immediately after the jury's verdict, Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Richard Luce immediately sentenced Lang to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Lang was captured in Statesboro, Georgia, several days after the slaying.
Lang still faces two charges of solicitation to commit murder after allegedly trying to arrange from jail the killing of Hosking's wife and daughter, whom he held hostage after the killing before he fled to Georgia. Lang's attorney, Jim Martin, told the judge that Lang may plead guilty to those charges September 9.
