ATLANTA - ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso said the perception of the Southeastern Conference is that ``everybody's a bunch of cheaters, a bunch of crooks.''
Corso made the comments at the Atlanta Sports Council college football luncheon Thursday.
``The national view is, the SEC cheats,'' Corso told a crowd of about 500. ``The SEC's going to get a bad reputation, like the Southwest Conference got 10, 15 years ago. You know what happened to them?''
That conference disbanded after 1995.
SEC members Alabama and Kentucky are on probation, and Tennessee and LSU are investigating academic fraud. This week, NCAA officials began looking into possible violations at Mississippi State.
Corso, a former coach at Louisville and Indiana, also said the Big 12 is the best football conference ``from top to bottom,'' Nebraska has the best environment to watch a game and ``Oklahoma plays better defense than any team in the SEC by far.''
