EAST POINT - The grandmother of a 3-year-old girl who died from head injuries last week turned herself in to authorities early Tuesday.
East Point police issued a warrant for Beverly Headspeth's arrest late Monday and Headspeth turned herself in around 2:21 a.m., police said.
Last month, Alexis Headspeth was hospitalized with head injuries after her grandmother claimed the girl almost drowned in a bathtub. The child was eventually taken off life support.
The state Division of Family and Children Services is investigating how she was injured, and what warnings the agency may have had that the child was in a precarious home environment.
Family members and neighbors in East Point said they repeatedly told DFACS they believed the girl and her siblings were being mistreated at the home of their maternal grandmother.
Headspeth was charged with child cruelty in the first-degree, according to WAGA-TV in Atlanta. She is expected in court Tuesday afternoon.
