DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA - NASCAR said Thursday that the front air dams on Pontiac and Chevrolet Winston Cup cars will be increased for the Aug. 18 race at Michigan International Speedway.
The Pontiacs will be allowed to extend the front of the cars by a half-inch, and the Chevys will get an additional inch.
The leading edge for the Pontiacs will not be allowed to extend more than 1 1/2 inches forward of the bumper. The leading edge for the Chevrolets cannot extend more than 3 1/2 inches forward of the bumper.
NASCAR said the modifications would be in place only for the Pepsi 400, pending further assessment.
``I'm glad for Pontiac getting a little more on the nose,'' said Johnny Benson, who drives the No. 10 Pontiac. ``We have found you can get through qualifying OK, but the Pontiacs have trouble racing compared to the other makes.''
