Restaurants toss food from unsanitary warehouse

ATLANTA - Some Atlanta restaurants and markets are throwing away food purchased from a Forest Park warehouse that was shut down because of roach and mice infestation. <br> <br> ``It&#39;s been a great wake-up call to all of us,&#39;&#39; said Scott Peacock, executive chef at Watershed, which bought pasta, buffalo mozzarella and canned San Marzano tomatoes from Terra Verde Farm. <br> <br> Department of Agriculture records reflected no violations during Terra Verde&#39;s last inspection, in September 2000. <br> <br> State inspectors got a different picture Tuesday after a call from federal Food and Drug Administration workers doing a routine check at the warehouse. <br> <br> The Department of Agriculture inspectors reported finding two dead mice, roach and rodent droppings on floors and some open bags of dried beans and flour that had spilled onto the floor. <br> <br> Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin described the conditions Thursday as ``deplorable.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Irvin&#39;s agency is proposing a $35,000 fine. <br> <br> Terra Verde owner Franco Boeri blamed an exterminator for the problem and said no contaminated food reached the public. <br> <br> ``It was dirty, I admit that; we didn&#39;t stay on top of that,&#39;&#39; Boeri said. ``All of us are responsible in the warehouse, we didn&#39;t take care of the problem right away the way we should have done. I am to blame for that. But right now, it&#39;s spic and span.&#34;
