ATLANTA - Offciails announced Wednesday that the proposed Georgia Aquarium will be built in downtown Atlanta on property donated by the Coca-Cola Company near Centennial Olympic Park.
Bernie Marcus, whose family foundation is paying for the aquarium, and Coke CEO Douglas Daft say the aquarium will be built on nine acres of a 20-acre parcel just north of the Olympic Park.
Coke also plans to relocate its World of Coca-Cola museum, now adjacent to Underground Atlanta, to the same site.
The Marcus Foundation has pledged up to $200 million to build the aquarium. A foundation spokesman announced about two weeks ago that it hoped to purchase 14 acres for the aquarium near Atlantic Station, a retail and residential development near Midtown.
But the foundation scuttled that plan because Marcus said, ``having the Georgia Aquarium next to Centennial Olympic Park was too good for the people of the city and state. Marcus is co-founder of The Home Depot.
