GAINESVILLE - Hall County commissioner Roger Cole Wednesday defended his $1,000 campaign contribution to one of the candidates running against fellow commissioner Brenda Branch in next Tuesday's Republican Primary.

Cole said he is supporting Deborah Lynn because "For years, I've seen Mrs. Lynn give of her time to help families fight inappropriate developments just as I did as a private citizen. I happen to believe people of her caliber have earned my support."

Cole added he did nothing "illegal, unethical or anything else" in making the contribution.
He says his attitude about one elected official getting involved in other races changed when Branch "gave money, public endorsement and public support" to one of people running against now-commission chairman Gary Gibbs in 2000.

Also Wednesday, Gibbs' wife confirmed she is the Sue Gibbs who gave $1,000 to Lynn's campaign. Mrs. Gibbs also noted that Branch supported one of her husband's opponents during that 2000 race. She says she'll probably give Lynn "another thousand" and even "wave some signs for her," calling Lynn a person who is "fair" and "tells the truth."
