CLEMSON, S.C. - The heat is on Tommy Bowden to produce a big winner here after a backward step from a 9-3 season in 2000 to 7-5 last year.

That could be tough with the loss of Woodrow Dantzler, the first player in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass from 2,000 in a season.

The QB job now belongs to Willie Simmons, who has played in 14 games but never as a starter.

Clemson's defense, however, which slipped to 79th in the nation, should be improved this time with eight starters back. ... Since 11-0 season at Tulane in 1998, Bowden is 22-14 in his three years at Clemson.
