DECATUR - An autopsy shows the 16-year-old girl who died after completing a five-kilometer cross country race suffered a heart attack.

Shai Owens was a junior at Cedar Grove High School in DeKalb County. She was rushed to a hospital after collapsing Tuesday night and pronounced dead a few hours later. The county medical examiner's office said Wednesday she had a heart attack.

The race at Shamrock Middle School was the first of the season run by any DeKalb County public school.

County school policy requires students' parents to sign permission forms that ask about pre-existing medical conditions. Cedar Grove's principal Sheryl Croft said Shai passed her mandatory annual doctor's examination recently.
