TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA - Lorenzo Booker, perhaps the most-coveted high school running back in the country last year, will be redshirted by Florida State this season, coach Bobby Bowden said Wednesday.
Bowden announced the decision after practice Wednesday, but said he had reservations about the redshirt.
``I talked to him today and he's smart enough, feels like it's best,'' Bowden said. ``(I) tried like heck to get to get him into the game the other night, just couldn't do it.''
Booker is listed as the fourth running back on the fifth-ranked Seminoles' depth chart behind Greg Jones, Nick Maddox and Willie Reid, all of whom played in last Saturday's 38-31 win over Iowa State.
If any of those players gets injured for an extended period of time, Bowden said he would change his mind about the redshirt. The NCAA does not officially grant a redshirt year until the current season is over.
``If they go down, I'm going to have to get out of my redshirt,'' Booker said. ``Which, if it happens late in the season is really an inconvenience to me, but were all out here for the same goal so I've got to take that into consideration.''
Booker, of Oxnard, Calif., rushed for 3,103 yards and 49 touchdowns as a high school senior. He had a nationally televised press conference when announcing his decision to attend Florida State over Notre Dame, Southern Cal and Washington.
