ATLANTA - Declining state revenues are forcing more than six million dollars in budget cuts over the next two years for the agency charged with protecting Georgia's environment.

The Department of Natural Resources will reduce spending this year by three million dollars, in response to an order from Governor Barnes to reduce state spending across the board.

The largest part of this year's cut -- more than 1.2 million -- will come from the money to buy cars, heavy equipment and computers. The department also hopes to trim another one million dollars through a hiring freeze.

The DNR board also announced that it will slash next year's budget request by an additional two million dollars on top of the one million dollars cut approved two weeks ago.
