NEWNAN - Willie White considers himself fortunate, even if he has an outdoor toilet.

``I'm blessed. Some people don't have no place to stay and are starving,'' he said. ``You can go to the bathroom in the woods, but you can't sleep there.''

White and neighbor Tommy Jones of the Geter Circle community in Coweta County soon will be flushing indoor toilets, thanks to a state grant of almost $500,000.

Geter Circle lies a few hundred yards from Newnan's city limits. As a result, the city's water provider, Newnan Utilities, won't provide service, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.

Until recently, White and Jones had outhouses, but they have been using portable toilets provided by the county. Other Geter Circle residents now using old, malfunctioning septic tanks will be hooked up, too.

Geter Circle residents also have pipes running from the back of their homes into nearby woods, where dishwater and dirty laundry water spill into a stream. Mounting health department citations put pressure on the county to address the waste.

Without the grant, White, Jones and their 40 neighbors might have lost their homes.
