University officials and members of the search committee declined to comment Thursday. Trustees have a special meeting at 9:30 a.m.
Holbrook would be the first woman president at the nation's second largest university. The 59-year-old cell biologist is also senior vice president for academic affairs at Georgia.
Kirwan announced his resignation in March to become chancellor for the Maryland university system. Past president Edward Jennings has been serving as interim president since Kirwan left July 1.
