Engine fails on Delta jet, lands safely at Los Angeles airport

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles airport spokesman said an engine failed on a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 shortly after takeoff from Orange County, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing Tuesday at Los Angeles International Airport. <br> <br> Flight 1938 to Atlanta, carrying 167 passengers, landed safely about 9:03 a.m. No one was hurt. <br> <br> The flight&#39;s scheduled departure time from John Wayne International Airport was 8:45 a.m. <br> <br> L.A. airport spokesman Tom Winfrey said the twin-engine Boeing 757 had just taken off when the pilot reported an engine had failed. <br> <br> Winfrey said the plane was diverted to Los Angeles International Airport, 35 miles northwest of John Wayne, and emergency equipment was stationed as a precaution. The jetliner landed without incident and passengers left the plane at a gate. <br> <br> A message left for Delta Air Lines spokesman Anthony Black wasn&#39;t immediately returned.
