WASHINGTON - Defender Emmy Barr scored the first goal of her career and later added an assist to help the Washington Freedom to a 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Beat on Wednesday night.

Barr gave Washington a 1-0 lead by heading in a free kick by Anne Makinen in the 11th minute. She then made a perfect cross to Bai Jie, who outleaped goalie Briana Scurry to head the ball in during the 19th minute.

Barr hadn't scored in the first 2,642 minutes of her WUSA career.

The Beat scored in the 49th minute when Washington midfielder Steffi Jones accidentally redirected a free kick by Atlanta's Nikki Serlenga's into her own goal.

The Beat came close to tying in the final minute of stoppage time when a ball bounced around in traffic in front of the goal before rolling just wide.

Washington (6-5-3) moved into third place with 21 points with its fourth win in five games. The Freedom are two points in front of Atlanta (6-6-1).

Washington coach Jim Gabarra was ejected in the 53rd minute after disputing a play where Atlanta's Sharolta Nonen took down Abby Wambach. Team officials confirmed that Gabarra will be suspended for the Freedom's next game, July 14 against Philadelphia.
