MACON - The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame is poised to offer its top job to a former University of Mississippi athletic official.
John Shafer resigned his post as athletic director at Ole Miss in April. He has been interviewed and named most qualified by the members of the museum authority.

Authority members say salary has not been discussed yet, but Shafer -- a former Kansas City Royals baseball player - is expected to be offered the job. Shafer also held a post as associate athletic director of the University of Georgia.

Shafer has already sold his home in Oxford, Mississippi, to move to Macon. He admits he's NOT a curator.

But he told The Macon Telegraph ``But as far as managing a facility for the best bang for your buck, I have done it.''

Museum officials are hoping Shafer can generate private donations to keep the fledgling museum - which opened in 1999 - afloat.
State funding to the museum was cut by 13 percent this year and by 9 percent for 2003. That will bring the state appropriation for 2003 to about $843,000.
