FORT BENNING - Former NFL player Pat Tillman has made a living out of pushing his body to the limit, putting himself through grueling training and sweating it out in the summer heat.

Only this year, he's doing it for a lot less pay. Tillman turned down a $3.6 million guaranteed contract in the National Football League for $18,000 a year and an uncertain future in the Army.

The 25-year-old starting safety for the Arizona Cardinals began basic training Monday at Fort Benning in southwest Georgia. He told coaches last year that he wanted to join the Rangers -- the Army's elite infantry unit -- and go through training with his younger brother, who enlisted with him.

Tillman has shown before that money is not his top priority. Last year, he turned down a nine-million-dollar, five-year offer from the Super Bowl champion Saint Louis Rams so he could stay with the perennial losing Cardinals for less money.
